This post is based on a Ensign article from this month's issue called, "Finding Your Life" by Elder D. Todd Christofferson. He mentions,
"When Jesus and His Apostles were together in Caesarea Philippi, He asked them this question: “Whom say ye that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). Peter, with reverent eloquence and power, responded, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16; see also Mark 8:29; Luke 9:20).
It thrills me to read those words; it thrills me to say them. Shortly after this sacred moment Jesus kindly instructed Peter and his Brethren about taking up one’s cross and losing one’s life as the way to find an abundant and eternal life.
“He that findeth his life shall lose it” (Matthew 10:39) Jesus consistently gave His life to the Father. He perfectly lost His life in the will of the Father. In premortality Satan’s model was focused on “I” (Moses 4:1). Christ’s commandment is to reject the Satanic model and follow Him in favor of the life that will lead us to the celestial kingdom. What does it mean to lose our life and thereby find it?
Here are four helps:
Take Up Your Cross Daily
We avoid all that is unclean while affirmatively keeping the two great commandments - love of God and fellowman (see Matthew 22:37–40).
Confess Christ before Others
Our lives should be a confession of Christ and, together with our words, testify of our faith in and devotion to Him. This testimony must be strongly defended in all circumstances. When we are firmly rooted in faith in Christ, we are in a position to receive and offer divine help.
Forsake the World
With our faith in Christ we must see our successes not as defining us but as making possible our service to God and fellowman. When we concern ourselves more with others, there is less time to be concerned with ourselves.
Lose Your Life in His Service
The Prophet Joseph Smith learned to lose his life in the service of his Master through the things he suffered. We could match his level of faithfulness. The greatest example is our Savior who, in giving His life, saved not only His own life but our lives as well.
His theme was “I do always those things that please [the Father]” (John 8:29). Make this the theme of your life, and you will save it."
